#EarthDay2020 - what we've achieved so far

International Earth Day has become one of the most widely celebrated environmental events across the globe. First launched in 1970, it now includes events in 193 countries and is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

The Earth Day movement originally coincided with the Spring Equinox on 21st March but the United Nations designated 22nd April as the International Earth Day.

Earth Day events across the world promote various ideas to increase awareness among people. Some of them include convincing people to buy green products, focus on the concept of Reduce-Recycle-Reuse, pledging businesses, communities, friends, families to fight against global warming.

The theme for Earth Day 2020 is climate action. The enormous challenge, but also the vast opportunities, of action on climate change being one as the most pressing topic of our time.

Here at PolycoHealthline, sustainability projects started over 15 years ago.  We first started in the office with schemes to recycle paper, ink toners and watched our water and electricity consumption. We then decided to see bigger, when we started plans to achieve the ISO14001: Environmental Management Systems, with business wide large scale implementations.  After months of hard work, we received our accreditation and became the proud holder of the much coveted Environmental Certification.

The team has worked tirelessly ever since to improve our Environmental Management Systems and to come up with new and innovative ways of becoming even more sustainable as a business. From infrastructure to products all the way to everyday changes.

One of our most recent achievements driven by staff was the launch of our PH Staff Water Bottle, PH employees were keen to engage in finding everyday “little things” that could make a difference. This is how the idea came to life in Autumn 2019. Everyone embraced the concept and the PH Water bottle was born. We estimate that on average as a business, we have reduced our monthly plastic bottle consumption by 3000.

This short video shows some of the key projects we have worked on. We hope to be able to look back in a year or two and be proud to share with you many more initiatives our PolycoHealthline people will have engaged in.

Fun Facts - Did you know?

There’s an Earth Day Flag or two! :
The Earth Day Flag, also called the Ecology Flag, was created by artist and cartoonist Ron Cobb in 1969 as a result of the environmental movement of the sixties. It resembles the Greek letter theta and would be the combination of the letters “E” and “O” taken from the words “Environment” and “Organism”. The flag consists of thirteen alternating green and white stripes said to represent pure air and green land.

You may have also come across The Blue Earth Flag, designed in 1970 by Earth Day founder and pioneer JohnMcConnell, an early leader in the international peace movement. Inspired by the striking first photographs of the whole Earth taken during America's historic Apollo 10 space mission in 1969.

There’s an Earth Day Anthem:
Its lyrics are set to the tone of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” melody on which the official anthem of the European Union is also based.

“Joyful joyful we adore our Earth in all its wonderment
Simple gifts of nature that all join into a paradise
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love throughout all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love throughout all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world.”
